A process heater is chosen on how the heat has to arrive rather than on raw output. Fired heaters burn gas or oil and suit large continuous duties where fuel is cheap and a flue is available. Electric heaters put the energy in directly, which makes them precise, clean at the point of use, and viable where combustion is impractical or a permit is not.

Watt density is the specification that decides service life. Push too much power through too little element surface and the sheath runs hot, the element degrades and the fluid around it cokes. A physically larger heater at lower watt density will usually outlast a compact one at the same kilowatt rating.
