Modern units combine PID control, programmable setpoint profiles, limit monitoring and data recording, which for many plants replaces a controller, a chart recorder and a separate safety limiter with one device.
Safety limiters deserve separate mention because they are not the same thing as a controller. An independent limiter with its own sensor is what protects against a controller that has failed with the output stuck on, and on heated systems that distinction is a safety requirement rather than a preference.
