ifm electronic makes the sensors that tell a machine where things are, how hard it is pushing and whether anything is flowing. It is one of the larger European sensor manufacturers, and its catalog runs from simple inductive proximity switches to IO-Link condition monitoring.

Inductive sensors are the volume item, and the thing worth knowing about them is that sensing distance depends on the target as much as the sensor. A stainless or aluminum target reduces the rated range against mild steel, which is the common explanation for a sensor that worked perfectly until somebody changed the material of the part it was watching. Full-metal housings and flush-mountable designs cover the harder installations.

Pressure sensing is where ifm replaced a generation of mechanical switches. An electronic sensor gives a live process value as well as switching outputs, which is what makes condition monitoring possible rather than just alarming after the fact. The measuring cell decides where it can be used: ceramic-capacitive cells for aggressive and abrasive media, stainless steel strain gauge cells for high pressure and hydraulic duty.

Flow and level sensors are the ones that turn an assumption into a measurement. A great many unplanned failures on heated or cooled equipment trace back to a cooling or lubrication flow that stopped without anyone noticing. Calorimetric sensors suit low-flow monitoring, magnetic-inductive meters give accurate volumetric flow on conductive liquids.

IO-Link is the thread running through the modern range. It carries parameter and diagnostic data on the same two wires as the signal, so a replaced sensor can be configured automatically from the controller instead of being set by hand on the machine. On a plant with hundreds of sensors that changes what a sensor swap costs in labor.

Every ifm product carries an article number that fixes sensing range, output type and connection in one code. Send it and we can quote; send the duty instead and we will specify it.

We source ifm sensors for the panel plants, process lines and machine builders we already supply with valves, drives and hydraulics.

Typical Applications

  • Machine position and end-of-travel sensing
  • Hydraulic and pneumatic pressure monitoring
  • Cooling and lubrication flow detection
  • Tank and reservoir level
  • IO-Link parameterized measurement
  • Condition monitoring retrofits

ifm electronic: Common Questions

Yes. Send the article number and we will quote availability and lead time, or identify the current equivalent if it has been superseded.

Sensing distance depends on target material. Non-ferrous targets reduce the rated range, sometimes by more than half. A factor 1 or full-metal sensor holds the same distance across materials.

Ceramic-capacitive suits aggressive and abrasive media; stainless steel strain gauge suits high pressure and hydraulic duty. Tell us the medium and pressure range.

Live process values, diagnostics, and remote parameterization. A replacement sensor can be configured from the controller rather than set by hand at the machine.

Send the medium, flow range, pipe size and process connection. Calorimetric sensors suit low-flow monitoring; magnetic-inductive meters give volumetric accuracy on conductive liquids.
