Inductive sensors detect metal without contact, which is why they end up as the position feedback on almost every automated machine. They fail from mechanical damage and from cable and connector fatigue far more often than from electronics.

Sensing distance depends on the target material as well as the sensor: a stainless or aluminum target reduces the rated range against mild steel, which is a common cause of intermittent detection after a target change. Full-metal housings and flush-mountable designs solve the tougher installations.
