Sensing distance depends on the target material as well as the sensor: a stainless or aluminum target reduces the rated range against mild steel, which is a common cause of intermittent detection after a target change. Full-metal housings and flush-mountable designs solve the tougher installations.

Sensing distance depends on the target material. Non-ferrous targets cut the rated range, sometimes by more than half, which is the usual explanation for a sensor that worked until somebody changed the material of the part it watches. A factor 1 sensor holds the same distance across materials.
