The manifold approach cuts wiring dramatically: one network cable to the island rather than a pair of wires per solenoid back to the cabinet.
Valve failures are usually the coil or the seal rather than the spool. A coil that has cooked from continuous duty and a seal hardened by compressed-air contaminants present identically, as a valve that stops shifting reliably.
