Air preparation is the least glamorous part of a pneumatic system and the part that determines how long everything downstream lasts. Compressed air arrives carrying water, compressor oil and pipe scale, and every one of those shortens valve and cylinder life.

The standard arrangement is filter, regulator and lubricator, though modern valves and cylinders are usually specified for non-lubricated air, in which case adding oil does harm rather than good. Filtration grade follows the application: general purpose for machine actuation, coalescing where oil aerosol matters, and adsorption where it must not be present at all.
