Choosing a Release Film for Pressing and Molding

Release film decides whether a part leaves the tool clean. How to specify thickness, temperature rating and material without over- or under-buying.

Release film is one of those consumables that gets no attention until a part comes off the tool with film bonded into its surface. It sits between the part and the tool, takes full heat and pressure, and has to let go cleanly at the end of every cycle.

What the Film Has to Do at Once

It needs low surface energy so resin will not stick to it. It needs to survive the cure temperature without softening. It needs enough elongation to conform to whatever shape the tool has. And it has to do all three simultaneously, which is why price per square meter is a poor way to choose.

Where ETFE Fits

ETFE, a fluoropolymer film, is the common answer for demanding work. It has genuinely low surface energy, it holds up at temperatures that soften polyolefin films, and it has useful elongation, so it drapes into detail rather than bridging over it.

It is used as release film in composite molding for glass and carbon reinforced parts, in laminate and panel pressing, and in semiconductor lay-up, all of which combine heat, pressure and an intolerance for surface contamination.

Polyolefin films, MOPP and HDPE, are cheaper and appropriate at lower temperatures. If the process runs cool enough for them, there is no reason to pay for fluoropolymer.

How to Specify One

  • Peak process temperature, not the set point. The film sees the peak.
  • The resin system, since release behavior is a function of the pair, not the film alone.
  • Thickness. Thinner conforms to detail better; thicker survives handling and sharp tool edges.
  • Width and roll length, matched to the tool and the way the line is loaded.
  • Whether the film is used once or reused, which changes the economics entirely.

The Failure Modes Worth Recognizing

Film bonding into the part surface usually means the temperature rating was exceeded. Film tearing during lay-up usually means it was too thin for the tool geometry or the handling. Film bridging across detail, leaving resin-rich pockets, usually means too little elongation for the shape.
