A machine tool spindle bearing is a different component from an ordinary ball bearing that happens to be accurate. It is ground to tighter tolerance, matched into sets, and supplied with a defined preload, because at spindle speeds the bearing arrangement determines runout, thermal growth and how long the spindle holds accuracy.

Angular contact bearings are supplied in matched sets with a specified contact angle and preload class, and mixing bearings from different sets defeats the matching. Hybrid bearings with ceramic balls run cooler at high speed because the lighter ball generates less centrifugal load on the outer race, which is why they appear in the fastest spindles.
