Claw pumps compress gas between two contra-rotating claw rotors that never touch each other or the housing. Because there is no contact, there is no wear surface and no lubricant in the compression chamber, so the pump does not consume vanes or oil and does not put oil mist into the exhaust.

The trade is capital cost against running cost. A dry claw pump costs more to buy and much less to keep running, and it suits continuous duty where an oil-lubricated pump's consumables and downtime add up.
