Screw pumps move gas along meshing rotors without contact or sealing fluid, which makes them the choice where the process gas would destroy an oil-sealed pump or where the vacuum must be genuinely dry. Chemical and semiconductor duties are the common cases.

Because nothing in the pumping chamber wears against anything else, service is largely bearings, seals and gear oil rather than replacement of contact parts. Condensable vapours are the real enemy, and a gas ballast or purge arrangement is usually part of the specification rather than an accessory.
