Three-phase motors, designed as asynchronous servo motors are just as robust as the purely asynchronous variant. However, they can be used universally because of the variable speed.

Moreover, this type of motor is used as a drive; eg electric forklifts. 

Even if the size is not a decisive factor, even this three-phase motors are cost savers.
